Stan Douglas’s artwork for the Moynihan Train Hall captures a selection of historical narratives from the lifespan of the original Pennsylvania Station through a series of nine photographic panels. Employing a combination of live actors in period costumes and computer-generated imagery, Douglas meticulously recreates and reimagines significant, yet often overlooked, moments in the station’s history, from impromptu vaudeville performances to the arrival of notable individuals. His work, installed in the Amtrak Waiting Room, not only pays tribute to the architectural grandeur of the station but also to the diverse human experiences that it hosted. These works are Douglas’s first permanent public commission in the United States, serving as a poignant reminder of the lost grandeur of the original Penn Station and the intimate moments of history that occurred within its walls.
